Frequency : News events that happen suddenly and fit the schedule of the local broadcaster are more likely to be reported. If the events have several short bursts of activity or happen quickly are favored over those that happen gradually and at inconvenient times.
Threshold : For local news this refers to the importance an event has on the local community rather than to the nation.
Simplicity : This refers to stories that are easier for the whole of the local community to understand. Such as those that have a clear image of the winner or loser, hero or villain, stories like these are more favored over more complex ones.
Continuity : ´Stories-with legs´-Stories that will be on-going and will maintain the same level of interest for the local audience over time.
Elitism/Celebrity : We as a society are very curious and interested towards the events that take place in the lives of famous people, those with power and those with celebrity status, this is why news concerning such people will always be given attention.
Human Interest : This is the ´bread and butter´ of local news, stories that create empathy or vicarious responses from the audience in a range of circumstances.
Negativity : This are stories based on events that have gone wrong and how the local community will be affected in negative ways by them. The local news actually has more success stories than national or global news although they still try to fit in some bad news as well.
Local Interest : These are national stories who are adapted to a local angle. For example a local soldier killed in Iraq which is also an example of negativity.
Oddity/Unusual: These are stories that shock or surprise the audience because they are rare , strange and very different to the type of news people are used to hearing.
